The Meldling is made up mainly of the Catling and Ratling, both of these races are what is called a Meldling. It is rumored that the creation of these two creatures were the result of a long forgotten mage who tried to combine the attributes of a cat and a rat with that of a human being, and that somehow either the magic went wrong, or the original creature escaped. So basically what originally was the result of that magic is long forgotten, but the end result of time is the Catling and the Ratling. It is rumored that there are other Meldling types, and these may be described in other tomes that may be discovered one day soon.
The appearance of these creatures is as follows. The Catling tends to be thin and graceful with long slender limbs. Their eyes are large and resemble that of….. well a cats… they have small pointed ears, and they have no facial hair, however they do have as humans do hair on their head. The skin of a Catling has a slight pattern to it and this pattern can be anything, and of any mixture of colors, the patterns intensity varies upon the Catling in question.
The Ratling appears to be a short and wiry creature, with thinning hair on his or her head, and has large cupped ears. Their eyes are small and close set, and tend to pinkish in color. They have long boney fingers, and they tend to have long noses… They have small sharp teeth that they can use to cut through ropes and the like, and their skin color varies and can be just about any color of pink to white to dark brown to black.
Catlings and Ratlings tend to have loose societies, and most have simply been absorbed into larger human cities and towns. However of the two the Catlings tends to be more readily accepted, and the Ratlings tends to be looked upon as untrustworthy and dishonest. Thus, Ratling settlements can be found in outlying ruins of old cities and other structures. These settlements have no real law except that of survival of the fittest. Ratlings deal in anything that they can get their hands on, and offer their various nefarious services to the highest and lowest bidder… Catlings have some limited trade, and offer services to various individuals that may require adventurers with nimble skills. They tend to not have any military or organized militias, and they have no special government.
